Curl Rehab Presents: The Review Crew!!
Hello everyone! I know from experience that product reviews usually leave me with one crucial question: How will this product work for ME? Product reviews are more helpful to me when the person reviewing it has a hair texture similar to mine, and how great would it be if we could see how a product works for multiple hair textures in one place? Not to worry, I’ve got you covered! Allow me to present The Review Crew to you all! The Review Crew is a group of ladies with different hair types who volunteer to review products for this feature, allowing naturals with different hair textures to find a review that is helpful to them in one place! Kenda- My hair is very thick with medium-tight coils. To use a scale I am 4a/4b. I am transitioning out of the TWA stage so I feel it is at an awkward length! I have had severe dry scalp/psoriasis and have yet to find a product that helps the dryness for an adequate amount of time.

The Review Crew: Kenda Reviews Tropical Roots
Introduce yourself! (name, what do you do, how long and why did you go natural)
Hi! I’m Kenda! I am a [now] self-employed freelance writer and fitness blogger at www.lgifit.com. I have been natural for seven months , I transitioned for three years and big chopped last July because of my daughter Mia.
Please describe your hair for us! (texture, length, thick/thin, any problems with dryness, dandruff, etc)
My hair is very thick with medium-tight coils. To use a scale I am a 4a/4b. I am transitioning out of the TWA stage so I feel it is at an awkward length! I have had severe dry scalp/psoriasis and have yet to find a product that helps the dryness for an adequate amount of time
First off, what is the product’s smell/consistency?
The tropical roots products all have a tropical smell to them.
Twist/Lock Crème: The consistency of the twist crème is similar to a normal twist cream or shea butter and held my hair very well.
The oil: The oil smelled tropical and gave a nice shine
The dry shampoo: medium mist
How did you use this product?
Twist Lock Crème: I used this for a twist out. Since I am allergic to a lot of products I made sure I didn’t touch my scalp. It held very well!
Oil: I sealed my twists with this oil, before I even took the twists out I got an amazing shine!
Dry Shampoo: With my dry scalp during my “in-between” days I usually oil my scalp, I used the shampoo to mist my scalp
Did the product meet its claims? How did your hair/scalp feel afterward? Describe any positive/negative effects.
Twist/Lock Crème: My twist out was SO DEFINED!! Probably my best one to date, it held so well and day two was just awesome!
Oil: True to its claims of shine, a little to greasy for my taste. My hair didn’t absorb it like other oils.
Dry Shampoo: I was so scared to use this because I wasn’t sure where the dirt was going! LOL But It got rid of my flakes (that day) and left a nice menthol/peppermint/tea tree oil clean feeling! Unfortunately it was temporary, the next day I was flake free, but the day after they were back. Whether that was the product or my raging scalp issues, I can’t really say for sure!
Would you buy this product, and use it again?
I would buy the twist crème again! Not a fan of the oil besides the shine, and the dry shampoo is just a cover-up!
Any final info you’d like to add?
Even though the twist creme had ingredients I normally wouldn’t use like petroleum, it worked well. There might be something there guys! Don’t knock it till your try it!

The Review Crew: Judith Reviews Tropical Roots
Introduce yourself! (name, what do you do, how long and why did you go natural)
My name is Judith and I’m a doctoral student in a biomedical science program. I did the big chop in May of 2011. I chose to go natural because I wanted to embrace true natural black beauty and empower myself by challenging myself to go against culturally accepted norms of beauty. When I thought about all the reasons why I got a perm in the first place I knew this was something I had to do. It allowed me to unravel my self-esteem out of my hair and bask in Nubian beauty! I love it.
Please describe your hair for us! (texture, length, thick/thin, any problems with dryness, dandruff, etc)
My hair is extremely thick! I have really tight curls (4b) and it’s about 3 inches of length now.
First off, what is the product’s smell/consistency?
The products smell great, every last one of them! The twisting cream was thick and has some moisture to it but left a cakey residue on freshly washed wet hair (you have to rub it in). The oil did not have a good slip to it, and was somewhat watery. I would not use it for a leave in. It smelled like fresh coconut oil and vanilla. The leave in shampoo spray smelled minty and also had a watery consistency but not foamy.
How did you use this product?
I used the twisting cream for a two-strand twist and the oil spray as a sealant right after a wash on damp hair. I used the leave in shampoo a couple of days later to try to get rid of the greasy oil residue in my hair. It did help.
Did the product meet its claims? How did your hair/scalp feel afterward? Describe any positive/negative effects.
These products were by no means spectacular. I would not run out and buy them. The twist cream was okay at giving a hold but not very good at moisturizing. The oil spray was waaayyyyyyy to greasy and it did not moisturize my hair adequately. I did not get a nice slip from using it. My hair felt dry and brittle the next day but it was still extremely greasy. The leave in shampoo was great for trying to cleanse your hair in between washes if you’re like me and too lazy to wash it. It made my scalp feel so fresh and breezy! I loved this product. However I must say I’m not sure how healthy it is for your hair. My favorite part about these products were the fresh fragrances that lasted the whole week.
Would you buy this product, and use it again?
I would NOT buy these products there are much better products on the market, in my opinion.
Any final info you’d like to add?
I like the idea of having a leave in shampoo spray. I think this particular product would be great for relieving itching due to braids or locks and leaving your scalp feeling fresh & clean.

The Review Crew: Nicole Reviews Tropical Roots
Introduce yourself! (name, what do you do, how long and why did you go natural)
Hi, my name is Nicole. I stopped over processing my hair a few years back. I cut off all my hair and grew it back to regain my natural hair pattern.
Please describe your hair for us! (texture, length, thick/thin, any problems with dryness, dandruff, etc)
I have short curly hair. About an inch long in the back and slightly longer in the front. It is fine and very thin throughout. But because it is curly it is hard to tell sometimes.
Tropical Roots Clean and Deposit Shampoo Spray
First off, what is the product’s smell/consistency?
The product is a spray the consistency of water. It sprays on your hair. It is meant to be a leave in shampoo. It has tropical pineapple/guava smell.
How did you use this product?
I sprayed it on and let it sit for about 5 minutes. I made my scalp tingle. I did not feel comfortable leaving it on so I rinsed it out but my scalp still felt tingly.
Did the product meet its claims? How did your hair/scalp feel afterward? Describe any positive/negative effects.
I’m not sure it cleansed my hair as much as it opened up my pores. I believe that is the desired effect because the next step was to use the oil which is supposed to hydrate and help with growth.
Would you buy this product, and use it again?
No. I prefer a more traditional shampoo that has a thicker consistency and washes out.
Any final info you’d like to add?
The product definitely made my scalp tingle and that was nice.
Tropical Roots Stimulating Growth Oil
First off, what is the product’s smell/consistency?
The product is an oil spray. It sprays on your hair. Again, the smell was like pineapple/guava.
How did you use this product?
I sprayed it on my towel dried hair after I finished shampooing it with the leave in shampoo. Since I rinsed the shampoo off , my hair was still a little damp. I massaged into my hair and scalp and let it sit for about 10 minutes. I then rinsed it out as much as I could.
Did the product meet its claims? How did your hair/scalp feel afterward? Describe any positive/negative effects.
The oil definitely made my hair moisturized. I don’t use oils often so it did make my hair and scalp oily. But the next day when it had absorbed my hair was very shiny and healthy looking.
Would you buy this product, and use it again?
I would buy it and use it on occasion as a hot oil treatment.
Any final info you’d like to add?
I really like the smell of these products!
Tropical Roots Twist Cream
First off, what is the product’s smell/consistency?
The product is a very thick cream that feels like it has chunks of something in it. When you rub it in your hands the chunks dissolve. It smells awesome just like the other products.
How did you use this product?
I rubbed the product in the palms of my hands and applied it throughout my damp hair. I combed it out and then took small pieces and did individual finger curls all over my head.
Did the product meet its claims? How did your hair/scalp feel afterward? Describe any positive/negative effects.
The cream definitely did what it said it would do. It held my hair together nicely while moisturizing it. The style lasted longer than my normal styles do, about 3 days (still had curl definition). The curls were slightly bigger, I believe this is because it is a thicker product than I normally use on my hair so the curls felt heavier. My scalp was a little oily but that could have been left over oil from the oil treatment. My hair looked shiny and healthy even after I washed the product out.
Would you buy this product, and use it again?
I would buy it and use it sparingly because it is a little heavy for my hair but it is great for curl definition!
Any final info you’d like to add?
Did I mention I REALLY like the smell of their products?!
