The Beauty Of The Beanie
Hello Everyone! This post is being written by a new convert! I am now a believer of the beanie!! I’ve been a pseudo believer for a while, but this week pretty much sealed it! So Tuesday night, I figured it was time for a co-wash. Just as I got out of the shower, the laziness hit me. SMH! So I put in my leave in conditioner and oil, and put in about 10 large twists. Now this is a weeknight, so I had to go to work in the morning. WHAT TO DO WITH THIS HAIR?!? I couldn’t wear the twists, and I didn’t feel like fashioning a bun. Enter the beanie. I put it on my head, and left! Some of my friends would be ashamed, but I don’t care. I’ve been wearing beanies all week! O_O I’m going to get some in different colors too. Why not? It’s autumn, beanies are in style, it’s easy, and it’s protective styling! Win! If you haven’t gotten a couple beanies for your fall rotation, pick some up! If you think your hair might snag on the fabric, just put a satin bonnet on under it, and hide the bonnet part. Or, you could buy a beanie with a protective natural hair lining in it, like I’m about to do!
Protective Styling
Hello Everyone! I’ve received a few questions about protective styling recently, and wanted to give my thoughts on it. There are a lot of opinions out there, “Protective styling is essential!”, “You don’t need protective styling!”, “Protective styling is boring!”, “Protective styling can be cute!”. All of the conflicting opinions can be too much to handle! The most important thing is that you LISTEN TO YOUR HAIR. Have you been wearing your hair out, and experiencing dry ends, breakage in your sink, or split ends right after a trim? You might want to try protective styling. Does your hair graze your shirt/sweater/coat and you feel strands being tugged? Yeah, try the protective styling. However, if you constantly wear your hair out, and have had no problems at all, maybe your hair doesn’t need it! If that’s the case, more power to ya!
Personally, my hair STAYS in protective styling. Mostly due to laziness on my part. I wear a bun all the time (and the OCCASIONAL medium twists). I had a problem with my ends snagging and breaking on my clothing when I would wear my hair straight, and I still have that issue if I wear my hair out now. Is it boring wearing the same style all the time? To some people it may be, but that has nothing to do with me. LOL! It seems to be working though! I see less breakage when I wash on the weekends, and my hair is growing.
Protective styling is simply the name given to hairstyles that keep your strands tucked up and away from the elements, and your ends from brushing or snagging on things. Just because you want to try protective styling doesn’t mean you have to wear the same style all the time! There are plenty of styles to choose from! There are bantu knots, cornrows, braided/twisted updos, buns (my fave!
), twists, weaves, wigs, braid/twist extensions, curly updos, beanies (
)… the list goes on and on! Look at some of the pictures below, and find some inspiration to try a new protective style!
