Fool Me Once, Fool Me Twice…
Oh, baby give me one more chance
Won’t you please let me
back in your heart?
Hello y’all. Let me just tell y’all about how gracious I am, and how some of these products out here just take advantage of me. I have a couple products that just didn’t work for my hair. It happens, I ain’t mad. The question is, what do you do with them? Give them away? Stick them in the cabinet? Apparently, I need to just throw mine out, because I tend to get bored and try to give them another chance. I just want to try to make it work, you know?
Anyway, you may have read my review on the My Honey Child Honey Nut Cleanser and Olive You deep conditioner. I was sad. Because after all the great reviews I read about it, it left my hair a mess! After one traumatizing use, I put it deep in the back of my closet with the other products that got ‘hidden’ at the beginning of Ayurvedic Challenge 2012.
Enter boredom. The Ayurvedic regimen I have is easy, predictable, effective, and just a bit boring. So I got restless. It was either try a new product, or cut off all my heat damage. I chose the less drastic option. Since I wanted to still be somewhat consistent with my Ayurvedic Challenge, I looked for any all-natural products I had, and what did I find? Ahh, you guessed it.
I thought that since I’ve been using an all-natural regimen for the past three months, the product would work differently than before. I was wrong.
Just like last time, the cleanser left my hair SO tangled! Like, bird’s nest tangled. I was really careful to wash my hair in twists and everything. A comb was completely out of the question once I finished that wash.
So, what do I do when a shampoo does me wrong? I reach for the conditioner! Aaaannnndddd… The conditioner didn’t help. *SIGH* I had to fix the dc by adding honey and olive oil to it. It was still a task to detangle, even after the extra ‘help’.
Again, I REALLY wanted this to work out. So I thought, ‘If I can’t use this conditioner as a dc, maybe I can make it work as a leave-in’. (At this point, I was clearly reaching. smh). So I made a Kimmaytube leave-in recipe with the conditioner. I added aloe vera juice, castor oil, olive oil, and rosemary and lavender essential oils. I added the mix to soaking wet hair, and put in two frenchbraids.
This was my first time trying french braids in YEARS, and I loved the result! The leave-in concoction didn’t do much by way of slip, but it did make my hair shiny and very soft once dry.
Suffice it to say, I won’t be trying these products again. I realize that the issue with the cleanser was that it was a castile soap base. Castile soap, due to it’s high pH, does nothing but tangle my hair and make it rough! I’m not sure what was up the the conditioner. Maybe it’s just one of those things that works for others, and not for me.
Now I’m also dealing with an itchy scalp from product buildup. I can’t WAIT to get back to my ‘boring’ ayurvedic regimen! Next time I want to experiment, I’ll pick up a new herbal powder at the market or something.
I definitely learned my lesson with that one! What do you all do with your ‘wack’ products?
My Honey Child Product Review!!!
Hello everyone!! Y’all know how you might hear so much buzz about a product, you watch review videos, read blog posts, look at pictures, and get REALLY hyped up about how great it probably is? You can’t afford it yet, but you find yourself singing “wait till I get my money right!” whenever you think about it? That’s how I was with the My Honey Child line. I’ve heard many great things about their Olive You deep conditioner, so when I saw they were having a Black Friday sale, it was on! I ordered the Olive You deep conditioner, and when I saw it was BOGO, I went ahead and ordered the Honey Nut scalp cleanser too!! *hits dougie*
Fast forward to last Thursday night. I was so excited about my product haul, I didn’t even wait until my usual wash day! I decided to use the scalp cleanser and Olive You conditioner together to make sure the results I obtained were from the new products, and not from any of my staples. First, let’s talk about the shampoo.
Honey nut Scalp Cleanser: The cleanser is pretty thin, so I applied it directly to my scalp, and massaged in. Once it was on there, there was a pretty good lather. For some reason, lather is important to me. I’ll think I’m missing spots if there’s no lather. On the label, this shampoo boasts, ”Makes hair soft, shiny, and healthy” Then, RIGHT ON THE FRONT “Makes hair manageable”. Soft? Ok, yeah it was soft. Shiny? eh… maybe, but Manageable? NAWL!! My hair was so tangled! Each strand was doing whatever it wanted to do. No clumping, just strands asserting their right to individuality. There was NO way I was bringing a comb anywhere near that! I washed my entire head (I have no idea why I continued), and emerged from the shower with what I can only describe as a ‘bird’s nest’ *SIGH* (I’m sorry there aren’t many pictures. My phone AND camera batteries died at this moment). So to fix this situation, I did what any natural would do. I reached for the conditioner…
Olive You Deep Conditioner
- : I’d heard so many good things about this conditioner, I really wasn’t too worried about the detangling nightmare that lay before me. The conditioner had a nice smell, a nice, thick consistency… and not enough slip. Not nearly enough slip to quickly undo the tangles caused by the cleanser. I thought about reaching under my sink and grabbing my go-to conditioner to make quick work of detangling, but I was determined to stick to the experiment. That night, detangling was a long, arduous task. I finally finished combing out my hair, and left the DC in under a plastic cap and towel for around 40 minutes. The end result was cool, but honestly, I’ve seen better with an

True to my scientific training, I need answers. I’ll be trying this again. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, maybe it was something I did. I’ll try leaving the twists in while shampooing to see if that cuts down on the tangles. Maybe I’ll have to use a different conditioner to detangle before I put in the DC. Or, maybe my hair just didn’t like these products. Sometimes that’s really all you can say; “My hair just doesn’t like that.” after all, the customer is always right! These products will probably chill under my sink waiting for me to get snowed in on a wash day with nothing but Tide and Dawn in the house…
Tell me what you think! Have you all tried the My Honey Child Honey Nut Scalp Cleanser and Olive You Deep Conditioner? Did it work for you? Am I doing something wrong here?
