NYE Style: Operation Super Shine
Hello everyone!! The planning continues! I really want this style to look nice, and have amazing SHINE! I need to be blinding people when I hit the light a certain way! Yes, it’s that serious. Of course shiny hair starts with HEALTHY hair. A closed cuticle will reflect light much more than a raised or damaged one. Also, texture does play a part in how much light gets reflected. of course, a large area of flat, smooth texture will reflect more than the smaller area that is available when hair curls. This is why healthy straightened hair may look shinier than healthy curly styles. This doesn’t mean that the straight style is MORE healthy, of course. But we’re talking about my twists, I want to have some serious shine. More than my usual amount! I have coconut oil with me, but my hair absorbs coconut oil after a while, reducing my shine factor. I can’t have that! So I asked the natural ladies on Twitter, and I got quite a few answers! Some were products, which I don’t have time to order now, but there were some natural oils too. Olive oil and castor oil seemed to be the top two. And what do you know, I have them both! I decided to do some mixing (I never pass up an opportunity to experiment), and try to create something that will give me super shine all weekend long!
First, I raided the kitchen. We had olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, some Vitamin E supplements (score!) and Crisco… *Side-eye*… I left the Crisco where it was, but pulled everything else out. Then, I made up a recipe!
4 tablespoons of coconut oil – a base that will be solid at room temp, and therefore easier to work with.
3 teaspoons of castor oil – for maximum shine power!
2 teaspoons of olive oil – supporting cast for the castor oil
2 Vitamin E pills (cut, and squeezed into mix) – because they were there, and they couldn’t hurt.
I let it solidify, and here was my finished product!
Hopefully, this mixture of oils will increase my shine potential. We shall see! Even if it doesn’t give me the long-lasting shine I’m looking for, it’s a great mix for sealing! Stay tuned for results!
Are there any particular products or oils that you all use to give your hair super shine? Tell me about them!
Plotting My NYE Style!!
Hello everyone!! Soooo, New Year’s eve is around the corner! I usually don’t do much by way of style. I’m quite satisfied with my twist-out/puff/bun/repeat routine. Until I saw this…
*faints* YAAAASSS!! BGLHonline did a feature on Laila (pictured), and she showed this gorgeous twisted updo she wore! I knew when I saw it, that I NEEDED to try it. You know what they say, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”, so I started lurking… I mean, planning. Laila has a YouTube page, so I lurked there to see if she made a tutorial. She didn’t, but I found this video with more pictures of the style. Since there’s no tutorial, I just studied the pictures as much as I could. This will essentially be a ‘style experiment’ (I’ve never done an updo on my hair before), so I need to do my research. I’ll keep plotting on the logistics; parting, products to use, etc. and I’ll let you all know how it turns out! If things go well, I may even record it! Hopefully, I’ll be able to recreate this style, how amazing would that be? Stay tuned, D-day is Thursday!
I’ll definitely twitpic the finished product, so if you’re on Twitter, follow me @CurlRehab. To see the video of the process when I upload it, subscribe to TheCurlyChemist on YouTube!!
