Weekend Hair!
Hello everyone! So I tried something new this weekend. I wanted to see what my hair would look like in a dry twist-out because I’m thinking of wearing my hair like that for National Natural Hair Meetup Day. So I used some Bee Mine Deja’s Hair Milk to flat twist my stretched (aka ‘dirty’) hair. I took the twists down in the morning and this was the result!
It worked pretty well! The Deja’s Hair Milk really worked well to moisturize my hair. The result was soft, fluffy hair with plenty of volume! I was pleasantly surprised! The hair milk smelled great AND it’s all natural! One day I’m going to see how it does on wet hair soon.
You can check out more Bee Mine products here if you like!
DIY: Ayurvedic Face Mask!
Hello everyone!! When I began the ayurvedic challenge, I originally planned to only change my hair regimen. However, the more I read about ayurveda, the more I wanted to try it in other parts of my life as well. So I decided to try incorporating ayurveda into my skin regimen. Let me give you some background.
I’ve always had oily, acne-prone skin, and I’ve always dealt with scarring. I’m pretty sure I’ve tried EVERYTHING I could to get my skin to clear up. I achieved some success using benzoyl peroxide, but my skin didn’t have the texture and glow that I wanted. It was like I wasn’t breaking out as much, but my skin still didn’t look healthy. I did some research about natural skin care and found out about the Oil Cleansing Method. I really wanted it to work for me! Whether my mixture of oils wasn’t right, or it just wasn’t for me, the OCM just made my skin break out more. Then I started the Ayurvedic challenge and realized a lot of the herbs I used on my hair could also be used for skin! I started mixing, and have found a face mask recipe that has worked wonders for my skin! You’ll see why it works when I explain the ingredients.
Ingredients
Multani (Mati) aka Fuller’s Earth
Fuller’s earth is a clay similar to kaolin clay that is extremely effective at absorbing dirt and oil. It stimulates circulation to the skin and absorbs and removes bacteria and dead skin cells.
Amla
Amla powder has a very high concentration of Vitamin C, which encourages cell turnover, removing dead skin cells, fading dark marks, and giving the skin a nice texture. Amla is a natural toner and astringent.
Neem
Neem is an antifungal and antibacterial. It is commonly used to treat skin infections such as Athlete’s Foot and ringworm, and also treats psoriasis and eczema.
I purchased all of these powders at a local Indian grocer.
To make the face mask, I mix equal amounts of Multani, Amla, and Neem powders with water to make a thin paste. I apply a thin layer to my face twice a day, let it sit for about 10-15 minutes and rinse off. I moisturize with a little grapeseed oil. I like grapeseed oil because it is nice and light, and doesn’t make my skin too greasy! It also has plenty of antioxidants that aid in making the skin supple and improving the complexion.
Sometimes I’ll leave the mask on overnight if I haven’t been consistent with the regimen and need a little extra help.
Things I’ve Learned
1. Do a spot check! Everyone’s skin is different, so make sure you test the face mask on a small patch of skin first. You don’t want to find out you are allergic to something the hard way!
2. Make a THIN paste. I’ve found that the paste needs to be about the consistency of a milkshake. Or, you could make a thick paste to make it easier to work with, then thin it with a little water in your hands before you use it. A thick paste seems to be much too strong and irritates my skin. If your skin is getting irritated (itchy, red, burning), thin the paste out with more water and try a spot test again.
3. Fuller’s Earth can be drying. I take a day off from the face mask sometimes. Using it too often (more than 10x a week, or overnight more than twice in a row for me) makes my nose a little dry. If your skin seems to be getting dry, reduce the frequency of use, or use less Fuller’s Earth in your mix.
4. STORE IN THE FRIDGE! Just because neem has antibacterial and antifungal properties does NOT mean this mix won’t spoil! If kept in the fridge, this mix will stay fresh indefinitely. If kept on the bathroom sink, it will only be good for about 24-36 hours.
I need to get some closer pictures. Anyway, I hope you all will love this face mask! It has REALLY helped improve my skins texture, and helped fade the previous scars. And it works fast! The first time I used it I noticed right away that my blemishes had gone down, and my skin was nice and soft! If you try it, let me know your results!
Ayurvedic Challenge: Regimen Update!
Hello everyone! It’s been 4 months since I started my personal Ayurvedic Challenge, and I can honestly say that it’s going great! I’m not using any synthetic products at all. Only ayurvedic herbs, butters, oils, and all-natural ingredients. I struggled in the beginning with the lack of silicones and tried to replicate the ‘slip’ caused by conditioners with oils. The result was my hair becoming an oil slick! Clearly NOT what I want. I have finally gotten my act together, and settled into a regimen that has been working very well for me!
Every week:
Pre-poo with Amla/Bhringraj oil
Cleanse with Shikakai (sometimes Aritha)/Amla/Neem powders mixed with water. I usually put the solution/paste on my scalp, massage it in, and let it sit for 30-45 minutes under a plastic cap. Rinse well!
Condition with Whipped honey butter, the avocado dc, or the honey-banana ayurvedic dc. Rinse with cool water.
Finally, I seal with shea butter or Vatika oil and twist! Sometimes the twists stay up under my beanie, sometimes I take them out and put my hair up in a ponytail or bun, and on the weekend, I usually wear a twist-out.
About once a month, I’ll do a henna treatment.
So, that’s pretty much it! I will moisturize as needed during the week, especially if I wear my hair out. In twists, my hair doesnt dry out nearly as fast! This is a very simple, but effective regimen. I want to start branching out and trying new herbs and oils in my mix, but I just havent gotten around to it yet. Below are some pictures of my journey, enjoy!

DIY: Honey-Banana Ayurvedic DC!
Hello everyone! I got back in the kitchen yesterday and did some mixing! I was just going to do a simple honey and olive oil conditioner, but I saw two bananas getting old, and thought a DC would be a better use for them! Well, honestly I thought about banana bread first, but 2 just isn’t enough, so DC it was! If you don’t know, bananas are a great ingredient for natural hair! Bananas help restore moisture and protect the elasticity of the hair, reducing breakage and split ends. Bananas also add shine and volume.
I also added Brahmi powder and Bringrahj oil to my mix because I’ve been seriously slacking with the ayurvedic love for my hair. Brahmi is known to strengthen hair roots to reduce shedding, controls premature graying, and controls dandruff when used on the scalp. Bhringraj helps stimulate hair growth, and strengthens hair roots. Here is the recipe I made up, y’all know I never measure.
Honey-Banana Ayurvedic DC
2 medium (very ripe) bananas
about 1/4 cup of honey
about 1 Tbsp olive Oil
about 2 Tsp Castor oil
about 1 Tsp Brahmi powder
about 1 Tsp Bhringraj oil
enough aloe vera juice to make it blend smoothly
I threw it all in my little mini blender and…
I coated my hair with the mixture, sat around with a plastic cap on for a while (about 1.5 episodes of America’s Next Top Model), then went ahead and rinsed.
This worked well, EXCEPT My hair felt a little… waxy. That’s the only way to describe the feeling. Which was annoying because it took more time to detangle, and it already takes a while to detangle since I’m not using silicones -__- . I have no idea what that was from. It had to have been the bananas because my hair doesn’t feel that way when I use avocados. I’ll have to investigate more.
Other than that, I loved this DC! It was very easy to make, my hair was shiny and fluffy, and my curls were poppin! I’ll definitely use it again with some tweaking to see if I can get rid of that waxy feeling.
Have any of you tried using bananas in a DC? What were your results?
Avocado DC To The Rescue!
Hello everyone! With things being so busy, I’ve definitely been neglecting my hair. It’s been terrible! I decided to use my trusty avocado dc to help my hair out with some moisture.
Avocado dc: (I never measure)
1/2 a ripe avocado
aloe vera juice (about 1/4 cup)
olive oil (about 1 Tbsp)
honey (about 2 Tbsp)
blend it up until it’s nice and smooth, then it’s ready to use! Make sure there are no lumps, otherwise, you’ll be struggling to get them out of your hair.
I left the dc on under a plastic cap for about 40 minutes, rinsed, twisted my hair with a little Natty Moist, and some Vatika oil, and that was that! I may need to use this recipe around every other week, and moisturize at least once during the week. Otherwise, my hair turns into a tangled, brittle mess!

Kenda- My hair is very thick with medium-tight coils. To use a scale I am 4a/4b. I am transitioning out of the TWA stage so I feel it is at an awkward length! I have had severe dry scalp/psoriasis and have yet to find a product that helps the dryness for an adequate amount of time.

Judith- My hair is extremely thick! I have really tight curls (4b/4c) and it’s to about 3 inches of length now.
